Celebrating the start of the Herefordshire (South & East) Methodist Circuit
The weekend of 30/31 August
2008 saw the end of an era and the start of a new as Bromyard Methodists said
goodbye to the Malvern & Ledbury Circuit of the Methodist Church and with
the Ledbury church joined with Ross on Wye, Burghill, Birch and two churches
(St. John’s & Chandos St.) in Hereford to form the new circuit of
‘Herefordshire (South & East).
On Saturday afternoon many
folk from the new circuit arrived at Bromyard to join in the activities arranged
by the members of the Bromyard church. Firstly there were two walks, one around
the town to look at our many historical places. This was very ably led and
illustrated by Mr. Dick Davies from the Bromyard & District History Society
to whom we are most grateful for a very interesting time. The other was a three
mile walk across the Bromyard Downs for the more energetic; this was led by Mr.
Glyn West a member of the church and was much appreciated by the participants as
they enjoyed the wonderful views as they walked. For once the weather was with
the walkers and all were very happy as they returned to the church hall for tea.
The
tea was a bring and share occasion and the tables were groaning with all the
mouth-watering fare laid out. This was a great time for folk to get to know one
another, some were friendships renewed from times past and others were
completely new. After tea there was a quiz organised by Mrs. Sandra Gale aided
by Mr. John Davies, this was a time of great fun and hilarity as impromptu teams
were formed and the competition was fierce but it all ended well and as they
left for home all were full of praise of the time here in Bromyard.
Sunday
evening there was a service at the main circuit church of St. John’s in St.
Owen St. Hereford to celebrate the start of the new circuit. The Rev’d David
Meachem the Superintendent Minister led the wonderful time of ‘Praise and
Thanksgiving’ and also conducted the choir formed by singers from all the
churches in the circuit and was assisted by Rev’d Jayne Webb who is now
minister in the circuit. The preacher at the service was the Rev’d Bill
Anderson, Chairman of the Birmingham District of the Methodist Church. It was a
memorable occasion, the church was full of people from all over the county and
the ‘Spirit’ was there to lift everyone to look forward to the future.
